I got a text from AT&T today on my iPhone telling me I'm in their "top 5% of data users" and if I use too much data their new policy is to slow down the speed at which my iPhone will work until the next billing period. I have the unlimited plan from when iPhones first came out. I got no other notice they were changing to this plan, and I have to say I'm pretty pissed about it. I stream a lot of video through the Hulu and Netflix apps.

Just a heads up for anyone else. Apparently this just took effect this month.

That sucks.

Sprint

I'm with Tmobile and this has been the case since forever lol. For every so and so amount of data I download, they slow down my data speed a so and so amount, permanently. Be glad it just started with ATT&T users lol

Verizon is also throttling back the speeds for heavy data users (abusers ;)). How much data do you typically use in a month? Gotta be pretty epic usage if you're in the top 5%!

I have no idea. I generally am online for an hour or two a day (sometimes more) and I generally stream a few hours of video every night while I'm doing homework and to fall asleep to. I send out about 10 emails a day and text maybe 10-20 messages a day. Really not extreme or anything. I'm guessing the bulk of it is the video streaming.

Yeah I was just in a Verizon store talking to a rep about video streaming. On 4G coverage, you can eat up about 2GB an hour streaming high quality video he said. I've been using about 2-3GB a month since I haven't been using my phone too much lately.

You still have unlimited data so they comply with your plan but they never guarenteed the speed at which you get that data. If you are home watching videos and such why not get on wifi? Wifi is a savior.

Still a dick move by the carriers...

Oh, I get that they are "complying" with the plan, it's just a dick move. For some reason when I try to stream video with wifi it doesn't work well. And I have really fast cable Internet on a WEP protected wireless network.

And more to the point, how bout more of a heads up than a text message after I get close to the limit? Kind of how people were so pissed at Netflix recently. Communicating with me when you're taking a good chunk of my money every month for the last couple years is always nice when you're making a rather large change...

ATT is a piece of crap. I don't understand why anyone uses them. I have US cellular. My plan is b!tchin, my phone works flawlessly everywhere, and I have not dropped a call in over 2 years. Seriously, they mean it on the commercials when they say join the happiest customers in wireless. ATT is a total joke for what the charge and what you get.
