At what age should kids stop being messy eaters?

Alright, let's hear your opinions and personal experiences. I believe kids should have a childhood and would never want to cut it short or rob them of it but when do you teach the little ones table manners?

Disclaimer : I'm not a parent, and kids freak me out a little when they're not mine.

That said, I guess try to work with them from the get go so that "constant" is always there, and as they kind of "get there feet under them" they can hone there practice, and before you know it, no mess. Sound right? I do a better job of playing "uncle with the firecrackers" so I could be way off. - N
