At what lenght do firemouths breed?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Aggression is hard to eliminate in 20L. That is why I prefer 4' tanks. The length allows for a better retreat and most substrate spawners prefer a 24" territory to defend. Therefore, a dominant male would stake out an entire 20L as his own and the rest would be getting a workout ;)

If you don't have access to a 55g I would try adding some clay pots with holes in them or some PVC pipe to offer more territory choices. If they are a pair the bond will form faster if larger weekly water changes are done as it will incite breeding.

Hey Guy's,

Not really trying to breed my firemouths but I have a pair that are in with the fish in my Sig.

How well do they protect the young and is there a snowballs chance in hell they would survive in this tank?

Chooka,
survival would depend on how much shelter the fry have. The predators would decimate any small fish unless they could stay hidden from hungry jaws. The FM's could defend them as fry but once they realize that the fish are maturing they will abandon their parental care nad the small fish will be on their own.

I sometimes allow 3 pairs to form at once. If I like the parents I strip those fry and leave the others to the tank. To date, zero survivors in the community tanks.
