At what temperature are your cichlids most active?

Activity will always be higher as the temp climbs....until the temp kills the fish anyways. Higher temperatures boost metabolism, which is the bodies way of regulating growth and body energy levels. Calories are burned based on the body's needs, which are generally set by the environment (food type being taken in, weather/temperature, energy expended and life growth stage). So as the temperature increases the metabolism, the body burns more calories (which is the purest form of energy available to multi-cellular organic life) to meet the demand of the higher metabolic rate.

A good example of this is with discus breeders. The way they get the fry to grow so quickly is by jacking the temp up to the high 80s and feeding 4-5 meals a day. The food provides calories to burn through metabolic function, stimulating growth.

In the case of SA cichlids, the majority of them do just fine at higher temperatures. All I keep are SA cichlids and all my tanks are set to 81 degrees. All my fish are active and that is what more fish keepers are looking for. They want to see their fish moving around, not just hovering in the same corner for hours on end.
