ATF/Dorado/Goonch/Datnoid PICS!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks Chicx, they look so ugly its beautiful! And very similar to me! Lol!

And thanks DB, the drip technique is def worth looking into .... thats interesting that you use the washer lines, makes sense .... thats how I do my water changes, and here I thought I was so clever! Would certainly make maintenence less, and would save money in the long run for sure ... how do you drain the tank? Is your drip system all RO? If so, what do you put back in vitamins and mineral wise? If its not all RO, how do you remove chlorine and other heavy metals?

The tank has to be plummed to a drain. I just use a floor drain in the basement, but I've seen people use tubs with sump pumps in them to move water outside to drain in the yard or other vessels for garden irrigation. As long as you use a good sized drain you can turn the water on and walk away, a 3/4" drain easily handles the lil 1/4" line I use (same as icemakers) so when I need to flush a tank I just turn it on wide open and walk away. Have left them on for a day, with absolutely no ill effects. The "whole house water filters" are all I use. Running water through one removes all the chlorine I have in the tap water here. 2 is overkill, and 3 is excessive, like I try to make most aspects of my systems...... lol I know several raykeepers on well water that drip and I'm pretty sure all they use are the same $10/ 2 pack of DuPont whole house carbon filters. Now IF you have Chloramine you need to use filters from the filter guys but it's the same housings, same idea, just higher quality carbon to break the chloramine bond. These filters will get the metals too.....

My RO is currently only used for mixing water for the saltwater eel tank. I just got float valves though so I'll be messing with it and freshwater soon. I will just use a smaller amount of straight tap water added to the RO to replenish minerals and make it stable.

Not trying to jack your thread, but pics are worth a thousand words, and I thought if you saw exactly how easy it was then you'd understand why people push them so much.

Dude, no worries about hijacking the thread ... I dont get offended easily even when people do me wrong, which you certainly are not .... I have a sump pit in my basement for flood protection, so that would be no problem, I was more concerned with how to get the water out of the tank before it overflows? I'm assuming drilling a hole for a drain pipe that then goes to the sump pit? Never drilled glass before, which def makes me nervous ... I'm definately getting into more efficient ways of filtering my water as well ... I see all these contraptions that people build, and it makes me think with a little knowledge I could really make my whole set up much more efficient, and save some money ... I made big leaps from my first 40 to the 220, and then another with setting up the 400 all myself ... now I'm ready for more!

Do you not run a sump???? :banhim:

OMG. WTF?

Someone call the federalies, we have a monkey with a hand grenade - Code for a call the DIYers, we have an monster fish keeper with some really nice fish, but no sump.

I hope I'm interpreting this all wrong.....

Can you please post pics of your filtration????

Rays without a sump or bead filter is a recipe for disaster. A ticking time bomb before everything goes to hell in a hand basket. That ray has pups, cats eat them all and one pukes, it's going to be all over.

Lol! No no no I have a sump! Haha, your funny .... I had a fluval 405 on my 40 gallon and hated it ... cleaned it at least once a month, clogged up, ran slow, and the gasket leaked all the time .... never again I said, as it cost me some small datnoids among other small fish .... I'll post some pics of my sump when I get home, but its a 3 compartment all filled with bio balls, and that is sitting in a 125 gallon tank, about 8 inches off the bottom so all the bioballs are elevated above the water line, but I'll post pics so you can see, being the handy man that you are ... somehow I have a feeling your going to give me a lecture anyway, like my old man would, lol! since he also was a mechanic and very handy when it came to engineering things, and used to lecture me all the time about things like this, but we'll see! Hahaha

Ok, there are 3 overflow boxes in the 400 gallon .... the center overflow has 2 holes drilled in the bottom, the 2 overflows on the ends of the tank each have 1 hole ... each drain hole has a bulkhead thats inner diameter is 1 inch, or to put it another way the hose I connected to each bulkhead is a 1 inch hose ... the sump has 3 compartments,

Woops, wasnt finished! Sorry ... the center compartment gets both drains from the center overflow, the right and left compartments get the drainage from the right and left overflow .... mechanical filtration is layed on top of each compartnent and on top of each overflow .... all the water, after passing through the bioballs collects into the 125 gallon tank that has the return pump in it. ... I decided to run the return line through a hole in the top of the tank rather than through 1 of the drains in the center overflow cause I wanted the biggest pump possible, and with only 3, 1 inch drains I was concerned buying a laguna max flow 4200, but with 4 drains I was more confident

Disregard the fact that there are 2 drains on the left compartment of the sump, thats the drain for 40 gallon I just plumbed into that filter ... you can tell its a different hose and extremely not pretty!

I also have some bio balls loose floating around in the sump, just cause I had extra and figured why not

Nice filtration Alix. I can't wait to get my big tank up and running. I'm jelly, you guys have such nice looking setups!

As for that teeth shot of the goonch, I saved that into my personal archive of awesome goonch teeth photos. :D
