ATF/Dorado/Goonch/Datnoid PICS!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Awesome tank and fish. I had a similar tank back in the day- 750gallon and had a bunch of monsters in it. Like you I was constantly battling fish picking or eating one another. The most shocking was a 24" silver arrowanna that I rescued ate my 16" long nose gar! Never even thought it could happen and it did! Love all your fish choices. I don't understand why people like Goliaths over VATF's. The VATFS have nicer shape and color in my opinion. Yours is a beauty. I'll see if I can find a pic of old setup. And Wes, you're being modest- you had the most diverse mix of monsters in one tank I have ever seen when you had your 900 in your apartment way back when-3' high fin shark and bicuda, bambusa, Nile perch, tor, the list goes on and on.

Thanks man, and i agree with Wes being modest, still makes me feel good though! Haha ... yeah, predator tank aint easy, especially with fish with teeth, eye injuries are all too common

Damn! Thats an awesome tank man, with some serious fish in there! A ST dat is def on my wish list, along with Nile Perch, and/or chinese perch .... love it man, i actually had an aro, and nile, and arapaima in my early days, but had to get rid of them because they were approaching ATF eating size, and i couldnt have that! ATF's just limit tankmates so much, especially the Goliaths in my opinion, due to slow growth and skittish nature ... and i agree with the VATF being beautiful, and more tank friendly as far as behavior and max size, in my experience, but nothing beats the mean long snout and head of a goliath ... i'll have to look up some of your threads, that tank is AWESOME!

Thanks, that tank was 10'x4'x30"
It's hard to see all the fish but I had Pima, silver arro, long nose gar, spotted gar, Chinese perch, Nile perch, barramundi, 2 ST dats, 1 Indo, gold pbass, Lince cat, wallago attu, dorado cat, P niger cat, Tigrinus and 3 tarpon :) Was going to add an VATF and Goliath but they grew too slow and would be fish food. The Lince cat is an amazing fish to say the least. I would say faster and turned sharper than a VATF or Dorado. He was about 16-17" and the 10' tank seemed too small for the kind of swimming it did. I sold my big tank because I couldn't really enjoy it in my garage and had my first newborn and needed garage space. One day I plan on getting another big tank. I still have my 240 gallon and 75 gallon. Look forward to seeing how your tank pans out.

I know the feeling, my big tank's in my basement as well, but mines only 30 inches wide, which means i need to upgrade in the next couple years ... 10×4 would arguably be a big enough tank to hold my boys for life, i'd love to do like 12x5-6, but we'll see ... heating these massive tanks aint cheap, especially in a basement or garage, but i love it so its worth it ... thats crazy about the lince cat too, i've heard they need massive tanks cause of all the swimming they do, crazy that 10x4 wasnt enough!

Well, we have some bad news and some good news ... good news is rays are both doing very well, female has healed up very nicely and has gotten 90% of her appetite back ... also the pups have hit a growth explosion, the female pup is almost ready for the big tank, i will most likely sell the male ... bad news is the bambusa died ... came home Tuesday from work and noticed 1 of the lids was moved, which never happens, and lots of water on the top of the tank, along with a powerhead cord was pulled ... so i turned on the lights and started looking at the ATF's to see any injuries, figuring it was one of them spazzing out, but it wasnt ... then i noticed the bambusa was swimming a little strange and had a mark on his head ... by Wednesday he wasnt able to swim anymore and was just getting blown around causing havoc in the tank so i euthenized him, knowing there was no way he was going to recover ... just further proof that a good knock to the head can cause death ... nobody ever bothered him so it wasnt fighting or stress, he most likely just got startled by something and smashed into things ... he was 21 inches long, and went from 7 inches to 21 inches in a year ... pretty amazing growth ... i did like him, he had character and wasnt fussy about anything, but he was reckless when getting food and his sheer size would stress the ATF's out so maybe this is a blessing in disguise, not to mention the fact that i would have needed to upgrade my tank sooner, since his growth is insanely fast, but either way he was a neat fish and i will miss him

Probably not going to look for another, at least not until my ATF's break the 20 inch mark ... they just grow so damn fast! But this makes them a good choice to buy later, and grow out super fast

Sorry about the loss. He was a beast! Bambusa have become unavailable for quite some time though. I talked to Wes and looks like they won't be available for quite a while. :(
