They have a really nice little odoe In my lfs but I am definitely getting an ATF soon, I know it has been done but is it likely to work out? Also what is the difference in growth rate?

Hard to say, although it doesn't seem to work out a whole lot. Seems like it might work better if there was a larger group than just one of each species.

I believe odoe grow quicker up to 10-12" than an ATF, but would then be outgrown from there.

I left my phone at work so couldn't see your reply >_< I got him on the way home and just decided to put a divider and gauge aggression then go from there, if I had to sell the pike I could easily find it a good home, I never knew the odoe was a schooling species?

I thought you might also find this scientific paper interesting.

Comparative ecology of the African Pike and Tigerfish in the Zambesi River floodplain

http://aquaticecology.tamu.edu/files/2012/07/WKW-tigerfish-JFB94.pdf

Hepsetus inhabited vegetated environments of river backwaters, lagoons, and sluggish tributaries, whereas Hydrocynus occupied the open water of the main river channel almost exclusively. During the period of annual flooding, juveniles of both species coexist in flooded savanna regions.

At the interface between river backwaters and channel habitats, Hydrocynus is a significant predator of Hepsetus, a factor that should further restrict the occurrence of the latter in open areas of the main channel

I've had a group of 4 odoe with a gatf for the last couple months. They get along without incident. At this point they are all growing fairly quickly. What size tank are you putting them in?

I haven't read all of the study but I have gotten threw most if it and it's really good but it's done on forskhalii, would behaviour differ between them and vittatus or tanzanaie (that's what I am thinking of getting)? Also it says that they coexist when small so that's hopeful :) and if that study hold true in aquaria then it looks like it would be the odoe that I would loose, I would still hate for it to happen but there is a big price difference and the odoe is the less expensive.

I think I am going to try it but I am going to be as cautious as I can and hope it works out, thanks for all of the advice it is really appreciated

That paper was written in the weird period after Brewster but before Paugey and Guegan really caught on. During that time period, vittatus was thought to be a junior synonym to forskahlii. We now know that they are unquestionably separate species. The fish referenced in that paper are Hydrocynus vittatus.

I'll elaborate further when I'm on my PC if anyone has any questions.

They are in a 750. I was concerned when I first added the gatf at 9" that the odoe may not care for him but it's been very peaceful. I'll update pics when I get a chance.
