ATF+odoe mix and growth rate info

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
They are in a 750. I was concerned when I first added the gatf at 9" that the odoe may not care for him but it's been very peaceful. I'll update pics when I get a chance.

Wow I would love to own a tank that big lol what's the dimensions? It's good to actually speak to someone who has done it, especially as it's a good result, I hope I am as lucky.

Pics would be awesome! :)

10x4x2.5. I was cautioned ahead of time but decided to give it a go. The odoes grew very fast but look to be slowing a little and the gatf is starting to outgrow them in length. I have a couple rays that aren't playing nice so I've got a divider in the tank. Once I take that out I'll get the pics.

Also what is the difference in growth rate?

Paul Skelton (freshwater fishes of Southern Africa) states a rapid growth of Odoe with maturity in their second year at 8-10''. He lists H. vittatus to mature at 2-3 years at 12-16''

That should help you.

That paper was written in the weird period after Brewster but before Paugey and Guegan really caught on. During that time period, vittatus was thought to be a junior synonym to forskahlii. We now know that they are unquestionably separate species. The fish referenced in that paper are Hydrocynus vittatus.

I'll elaborate further when I'm on my PC if anyone has any questions.

Really good info

H. Odoe also just got revised by Decru, Vreven and Snoeks. They did it before and now even propose it's three different species in Lower Guinea alone: H. akawo, H. lineata, and H. kingsleyae sp. nov.

I had heard rumblings that there was a strong possibility that H. odoe comprised a species complex, but wasn't aware that anyone had actually done work on it. Thanks for the info!

Where's the info!?!?

I guessed by looking at net pics there was at least 2 different species.

Rob........ Sounds like it's time for a new sticky!!! lol
