So I've been wanting to custom order a 48x48x27 tank. The prices in doing this with delivery and all have definatly held me back a lot. Then I saw a 200g Marineland Deep Dimension tank and I found my holy grail basically...I plan on getting it as soon as my saltwater tank is sold. I just had an idea though and I was wondering if it was possible. Could I take 2 90 gallon tanks. remove the back pane of glass on both tanks, fit a piece of plywood under and seal the two tanks together to make a 180 gallon 48x36x24???
I figure since I would be taking off the original braces I would have to build the tank into a stand for the structural support of the tank. I've included pictures so maybe someone will understand what I'm thinking of doing and giving me some feedback.
Hopefully this idea can become a reality.

I think you'd be better if you took the two 4' back panels that were removed and ahve them cut down to 36". Replace the four 18" side panels with the two 36" panels.

Have two of the 18" panels cut into 4 equal triangles and attach them to the top 4 corners for support.

It would be nifty but you'd have to build some sort of bracing for the top of the tank. Probably do some eurobracing?

I like that idea of using the existing 48'' panes for the 36'' panes since it would be a more solid structure, then using the 18'' panes as a sort of eurobracing...this project may just happen...
How would I hold the glass together while sealing? I have never done it but since I got those ideas, I'm really feeling this build, this may turn into a build thread real soon...might be grabbing a 90 of kijiji or craigslist soon...FINGERS CROSSED

Yes its possibe, but with all the bracing and where the glass meets would make it not a great show tank. If thats not important though, go for it! I belive there is a thread on this site where there was a guy who combined 2 five ft tanks into a 10ft, but he took off the end panels not the back though. I would check it out. good like!

As for it being my show tank, yes, but if its done the way Bderick67 suggested there really wouldn't be anything to see, it would look like a normal tank, the bottom will be covered by sand or gravel and the top would be covered by a canopy...im actually getting really excited about this, I just need to find a partner 90...

not worth it.
might as well build a plywood tank.

did anyone hear about the guy who, glued two 55 gallons together?

do you think the standard glass thicknesses will be fine? I want this to be secure. Im 90% I'm going to do this...found the 90 gallon I need. Now I'm looking into silicone, any suggestions?
I know you guys wana see the build thread but I need to get the planning bit done first
