I'm going to attempt an all-male Peacock/Hap 55 gallon tank. Since it's a smaller tank, I'm trying to get the smaller and milder species.

Here's what I'd like to try getting:
Cobue
Ngara Flametail
German Red
Benga
Lwanda
Placidochromis Electra
Otopharynx Lithobates Z Rock
Copadichromis Trewavase

Do you see any conflicts with that list? I hear that Lwanda's can be somewhat aggressive.

Any other peacocks you might suggest? I'd like to limit the tank to only 9 fish.

all fish are different so you never know but in general i think if you add them all at once / raise them together you will be fine. if you don't have any females it will reduce aggression as well as having that many fish will help disperse any aggression.

that is a lot of stuartgranti and those may not like each other too much but without the females your chances are better.

That looks like a genuinely well-thought out list. :)

I've kept both Lwandas and Bengas and the Bengas take the cake in aggression... almost as bad as lemon Jakes or Eureka/Caroli Jakes.

Selection looks good to me. Just be prepared to eventually have to move them to a 75 down the road. They should be fine for a while though.

I think my purchases are going to be in the 2" to 3" range. Crossing my fingers that it works out.

I hope so. I already pre-ordered the Benga, Cobue, German Red, and Z-Rock. I will be picking them up at a local swap on Sunday.

Hopefully, I can find the rest of what's on my list.

I can't wait! :nilly:

I'm no african pro but I've seen that territorial boundaries often play a huge part in scenarios like this. If you provide no hideys at all they will have nothing to guard and might not fight over that. Or if you provide double or triple the amount of caves needed they might never have to quarrel at all. But it's the middle region where each fish has only one cave (or slightly less than one cave per fish) that seems to really get sparks flying.

Knifegill - i know that mbuna require a lot of hiding spots, but thought that an all-male peacock/hap tank was different. Plus, don't peacocks like open swimming space? Can someone clarify?
