attempting the proyecto imposible: breeding king piranha.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don't think lighting and thunder has any major effect on them breeding, more so just with an environment that they feel comfortable enough to breed and you need to have at least a pair in the group, if they happen to be all same sex then it won't work.
you can try simulate wet/dry season as most of the amazonian fish time their breeding during wet season, some people will drop their water level then simulate rain fall but IMO those are not really necessary as our tanks are not deep enough to have a big impact on water pressure anyway. I would imagine during dry season the water quality would degrade as compare to wet season, nitrite build up, oxygen level drops, temperature increases, less food available, etc. then when wet season comes water quality improves, food increases, temperature drops with all the fresh cold rain water. maybe try to simulate those. I know someone with rbps that will spawn when there's a big storm out there so maybe time your water change when there's change in weather (more barometric pressure related than just lighting and thunder)??

ah good advice. I will try. I know the fish are not yet ready for breeding but it will be a goal of mine to make it happen. I will not hold my breath.

Try a 24/7 drip system for these fish. Cleaner water could possibly help?

those are some really big tanks. dont know why it woud be a problem to breed. Have people really really tried? Does any one know what the problem is? Senior Riverboners, you must show pics of your giant tanks!

anything that people can make money off of has been tried over and over. why would they fool around with red bellies when they could be breeding fish that'll get them more bang for their bucks? i'm not sure what exactly the problem is but there's a ton of fish (not just in the piranha family) and animals that we have not been able to breed in captivity and we may never know why.

if they don't breed in massive aquariums, i'm not sure what hope we have in our home tanks

Besides simulating heavy rainfall, you also need to attract insects and other animal that lay eggs in the water. This will assured the fish that there will be abundance of food for its youngs to feed when born. Try that! I am sure your family will all run away.

Gracias amigos. Im getting a lot of tips, but I think I am very far away from even trying, because they are too small and cannot be sexed at this time. When I do have a sexed pair, I will try the drip system and water quality adjustments. At that time I will bring this thread back from the dead. My name is Johnny Rico, and I shall return!

More power to you!

It'd be awesome!!!

Quick photo before you leave for a few years....?
