Thats because they kill the fish.
In our streams in pa the fish commission targets the muddy bottom creeks and trys to kill the spawn before the population gets out of wack.
They get bigger than you guys think I saw one last fall that was hanging off a steelhead that was at least 18'' if not more it was sick because the fish was maybe 28''. I think it would be horrible swimming upstream trying to spawn and have that thing hanging off my side.

Um...did you even read the rest of the thread?

There are more than one species of lamprey...
Not even all feed on fish in fact...

Shadowbass I was refering to your post about people killing sea lamprey in ohio. I should be more specific next time. I was just putting my thought on the topic and telling you why they kill them. I also knew that there was more than one kind. I wasn't refering to the lampreys out west.

I was not referring to sea lampreys, I was referring to the fact that many fishermen believe lampreys should be killed regardless of species. It was a response to a poster that also indicated the same thing.

No one even referred to sea lamprey size in this thread. The original post was determined to be a chestnut lamprey, which does not reach a large size.

There are six Native species of Lamprey in Ohio in addition to the Exotic Sea Lamprey.. Almost all of them are Imperiled or endangered... (There are Six in your state also..Do you know them?)

I do believe that general ignorance of these fish was identified as a factor in why people kill these. And it is identified that Education is needed about them...

Your post was not on the topic we are discussing at all. And that stupid bit about "Oh how horrible" was down right obnoxious on sooooo many levels.....Do you not get this is the type of crap that causes angler and general population persecution in the first place???

Now can we go back to Native Lamprey their biology, coolness, avenues for education about them etc. and leave sea Lamprey and that mess to a different thread? Feel fee to start a Sea lamprey thread if you wish, but let's knock this off right now as this is not the topic. This topic is Native Lamprey and Native Lamprey conservation. If you have an option or idea to stop people from Killing all these fish COOL .... Let's hear it...

LOL Yeah, I was gonna set up a hagfish pool in my store just for the kiddies....
