Probably because I don't try to hold the vals back (and a small pleco), this tank seldom builds up any algae, even though it gets 5 hours of direct morning sun, it has become a bit overgrown.
The only tinkering it gets, is to pull out a couple handfuls of water lettuce and salvinia almost daily.
I don't do anything for algae in my tanks, but it really only grows a lot in the 55g. It's a newer tank (6 months or so) so it is going through many different algae blooms still. I like the look, it reminds me of the bottoms of many ponds/lakes.
Definitely, even in the most naturalistic tanks you've gotta keep the front glass clean. Everything in the tank can be covered with assorted algae and it looks great, but even a small amount on the viewing pane looks like absolute crap.
Most of my tanks are lit with shoplights or DIY contraptions of various types. I find that if you place the light near the front and then angle the fixture juuuuust right, the light doesn't actually hit the front glass so algal growth on that pane is minimized.
My axolotl lives in a 40breeder that is situated on a desk in my basement fishroom. It's central in the room; one walks all the way around that desk and the tank is visible from every side...so all four panes need to be kept clean and algae-free. What a PITA!
