AUL question

Now, out of all ppl that responded a few months as the answer, how many of you ACTUALLY own an AUL ? I am just curious.

I have my 17" in a 120 (4x2x2) along with 3 of 19-20" endlies. They're all perfectly fine. All these guys are not what you considered as "always constantly moving fish", most of them just chills on the bottom until feeding time. I rarely see my AUL moves, most of the time he just hang out on the corner.

He's happy and content. They grow very very slowly past 12-13" besides, for most people, their interest will outgrow the actual fish. it's a sad reality, but for the majority, you'll sell your AUL to someone else before he outgrows your tank because you want something else.

There's only a few hobbyist that keeps any fish for a very long period of time. People get bored and wants to do something different

I know you do, I was reffering to other people on this board. Just because they see 12-16" AUL, they automatically assume you only have a few months to be in a 5x2x2.

12-16" AUL is different than 12-16" Aros, bass or rays.

You're on the right track...just think about potential with these guys, they live forever (prolly outlive you), very tough and IMO easy to care for.

They don't grab food as aggresively as I wish they would, so keep them with docile tankmates. They do love to eat..

okay there fine with aro, bichir, gar, flagtails, datnoids, peacock bass right?

Does your bichir get food just fine ? if so, then the AUL will be fine. Their mouth is not that big, you'd have to give them smaller pieces of food, so they can swallow at once rather than holding on to the food and taking their time to swallow it as a whole.

This is how accident happens, I had a problem in the early stage with my aul. He bit down ona smelt, but before swallowing it, a bichir was trying to take the smelt away and bit a chunk out of his mouth. He healed up quickly but it taught me a lesson to feed the tankmates first, then feed the aul smaller pieces.

i feed bichirs pellets and i throw like 50 pellet at a time plenty of food for 10 bichir

As for AULs not doing much i guess it depends on the fish.

I have a 2 foot AUL in a 6x4 tank and he is always cruising around, sure he isnt constantly moving or fast he just takes his time and appears to be checking out other fish in the tank.

Mine eats fish poo aswell. :headbang2

1 of my lungfish is very active and doesn't have a care in the world but to eat, wonder around and chill with my bichirs.

Also Hao, when you do have your AUL don't add it to your larger bichir till it get to 10"+ so it will be able to compete. Also train it to go to the top when feeding time so it can have it share as most of the time the food get stolen from them by other bottom dweller. You know that lungfish feeding style is to suck the food into the mouth, chew it while spitting it out halfway with mix of slime and finally swallow it. They are like teasing other fish and it cute to watch. It's just like a lil' kid playing with it's food.
