the fish have over the course of the past 2 months settled into the tank and established a clear hierarchy with the new male patrolling the foreground and everyone else lurking in the undergrowth behind.

that is, until what i suspect is the biggest female, somehow managed to get on his good side and is now allowed to hang out in front with him.

i'm keeping an eye on aggression levels as i can see that both now nip at the others from time to time. they haven't begun the full on tag team carnage that is supposed to come with a bonded pair. fingers crossed romance blossoms and then i can re-home the other 5

Looks like a pair to me. Scouting the front of the tank because it's where the food comes from. Getting "dibs" in their own way. If they share that privilege, it's likely a good sign. :)

Quick update:

Sold 5 of the fish leaving my pair! Currently in a winter phase temps around 15 at night 19 during the day. I’ve lowered feeding frequency a bit but they still have a good appetite.

Haha they really made a number on your aquascape! :D

Haha yeah. I actually made a big cave for them out of the rocks on the left side. It’s big enough for them to go in and turn around in there! Aside that I leave the tank up to them to scape!

Brought them out of their 2 month winter these past few days. Water changed and filled the tank water level up by 4 inches

Had a planaria outbreak so I put in some medicine. Did a water change and all hell broke loose again.
