It's not always a certain age, outside stimuli can cause or delay it. Like breedable females with no breeding male can cause a juvenile male to mature faster. Alot of times weather has quite a bit to do with it, like they may breed in the warmer season and you keep tank temps on the cooler side it could take longer for a male to mature.I would agree though going male coloration.
