Aurea the golden/flash tiger catfish (Brachyplatystoma juruense) growout & color experiment

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Don’t feed shrimp is my advice. I’ll have grown many Tigrinus and jurense from 2” to 30” Shrimp will kill them at a young age some fish are very sensitive to it I just lost a fish recently that took me a long time to get and I can guarantee the shrimp did it. Their bodies swell up. I’m guessing they can’t digest it easily

That's pretty unusual, I would assume that invertebrates (including shrimp) would form a part of their wild diets.

I think it has something to do with the preservatives that the frozen shrimp companies use. As soon as I stopped feeding shrimp to juvenile or baby fish, I was able to grow them big

I believe it has something to do with Thiaminase or a similar nutrient that can affect hormones and growth, you will have to check me on this. I believe it was also seen in the polypterus community. Sea shrimp is now a treat and fish fillet is a better staple

If the fish filets are from farms then it still could be issues with nutrition.

Welp, this little experiment is going to end in the most supreme of ignominies. Saturday morning my boy and I woke up to find Aurea acting strangely; swimming at the surface, gasping, obviously quite distressed. It took a minute to figure out the issue, the heater evidently had the thermostat go out and host stuck in the "on" position. By the time I got the tank cooled down, she was on her side and occasionally doing the loop swimming thing that fish that don't yet realize that they're dead often do. She kept breathing all through Saturday and Sunday, but apparently let go sometime last night. In spite of knowing that there was basically no hope, instill dared to hope that she'd come back.

No such luck. Evidently, I cooked my fish.

Just hope it doesn't take 10 years to find a nice oddball again.

I'm gutted, but not giving up

I'm so sorry Rob, I know how you feel. I got gutted when my Vulture recently decided my Yarelli looked good enough to taste. I personally lost some of my drive because of it but I'm glad to hear you didn't.

Sorry to hear both you guys. I've lost thousands of fish over 12 years, half of them valuable. It's either you grow some skin or leave the hobby or go insane. The last two options are not for me. I hope and pray they are not for you either.

koltsixx koltsixx Kolt, that relatively little wound could not have been the cause of death, could it? Something similar happened between Dave's yarelli and vulture except his vulture made a horrible crater in yarelli. Fishman Dave Fishman Dave has got it in his thread. Have you seen it?
