i don't understand the idea in this, but there won't be profit made and i don't understand why people are getting upset by it, the sign did stand for the horrors of post war germany, but i would think at the end of the holocaust the entire camp should have been destroyed, mabey germany just wanted it up to make profit from the tourism the camp attracts, any true educational system should be able to educate people about the holocaust, there shouldn't have been the need to have the camp still there, theres plenty of documentary film/pictures, writen words and evidence of the attrosions of these events, i'm kind of insulted germany would keep a symbol of such evil as the camp around after the holocaust was over.

exactly, i heard people of people collecting tattoos from the era, when i say tattoos i mean actual tattoos with the skin.

if people buy pieces of dead skin for historical and collection value, im sure some one will pay for that sign.

After nazi's kill jews they'd skin them and make lampshades from the skin, being jews were tattoed the shades with the tattoe on them was valuable to the market for them.

who else but a neo nazi nutjob would do something like that?

um. the whole reason the world is offended is exactly because we know what it symbolized..

maybe some pissed off jews who were sick of constant slap in the face...

Really sad news.

This sign has probably been weighed in for scrap. Could get a tidy sum for 90lbs of cast. And with Xmas coming up n all.....

"WORK SET`S YOU FREE" What a joke.

to bad that entire facility doesn't burn to the ground

these places stand as a reminder so it never happens again. another example of that is that germany makes it mandatory that everyone in school goes to dachau and learns about the holocaust.

yea the holocaust is really ingrained in people in germany, ive heard of kids in germany now apolegizing to those friends of jewish decent for what "they" did.

granted it shouldnt be washed over and should be remembered but i dont think it should be ingrained to the point that the current generation should feel bad for what their forefathers did.

Agreed but that can go for the US too. We still have to say sorry all the time for slavery.

I think a fitting punishment for anyone that gets caught being involved in this theft that they should have X amount of hours community service at the camp. like working on the grounds crew. so they know what work will set you free means. and maybe think twice before doing something that stupid again.

i think we really passed that time now(atleast in VA). i remember the big push for stuff like that maybe 5-10 years ago, all that PC stuff is getting old.
i think if someone ask me to say i was sorry i would probably laugh. its was horrible thing but i had no part in it.

interesting you say so, my information comes from college proffesors of history (2) does yours come from the internet? in which case i completey retract my statements.

my ex husband is from Ramstein Germany-he lived there for over 20 years-and he loves Germany. the general consensus at the time he lived there was that Germans still had no pride in their country-and felt tremendous guilt over the Third Reich. He said that touring the deathcamps was the most horrible thing he ever went through.. and that people cried while they went through it.. and he got teary eyed when he saw the ovens used. I remember him telling me he did cry when he saw a large room completely full of childrens shoes and dolls and toys.. he said it was stacked to the ceiling.
I think Germans have had their faces smeared in the blame for too long, as not all Germans were Nazi's,, and not all Nazis were willing participants-towards the end of the war Hitlers Youth were just children, and they were being used to kill. It wasnt just Hitler, but he had men who were far crazier than him working for him.. We forget that other countries (namely France) started off with mass exterminations in the beginning of the War-they started mass killings before Germany did to clear out the Jews.
I guess i would not want the camps destroyed because they stand for a monstrosity that can easily happen again- Germany was weak, vulnerable and had no morale or pride- after being blamed for WWI and paying reparations they were open to the kind of enthusiasm and what they thought was pride in Germany that Hitler showed-they just ate it up..

Germans are starting to actually be proud again- but to me the camps should stay and serve as a reminder that this thing COULD happen again.. to any country. I really hope the sign is returned and put back where it belongs. Also, alot of countries have made horrible mistakes in exterminatng and assimilations (i.e. religion) of natives/andiginous peoples.

i work with an RN (on a psych ward) who is German, and only been here in the US for about 3 yrs now, and you dont know how many times the vets call her Nazi- or other names i wont mention. its horrible, and shes one of the nicest people i know. I wish that old stereotype would go away.
