Hi,
The wife’s been talking about emigrating from the UK to OZ .... I’m still not sold!
A question I have is
‘How will it affect my hobby?’
Being in the UK I can keep pretty much whatever fish I want but obviously this is going to be restricted to a large degree if we move.
My main interest is predatory fish and Plecos.
I’m currently keeping SA Arowana, Stingrays, Cichla, L numbers and American Cichlids! I also have a Koi pond.
Any info would be greatly appreciated ?

We have all the basic fish here, you would have to switch the arowana for a saratoga but you can still get rays and a selection of plecos and CA cichlids. Probably not the range you are used to but you can still get a nice variety. An example is you can always get firemouths but not any other variety of the thorichthys family. If you like predators then jags and festae and dovii are common too. Things like rays and polys are extremely expensive though, looking at approx $250AU for a poly as big as your little finger and $1500AU for a ray. I've seen certain L numbers well into the $1000s too.Depending on what state you are looking at settling in koi may or may not be legal.
what part of Australia are you thinking of moving to? I would recommend coming here for a holiday first and checking things out. It's a long way to pack everything up and come over only to find out it isn't what you expected. It's a cool place to live but it's really just another western country, besides some nice wildlife and scenery and weather (this also depends where you settle) you will have the same hassles you have anywhere else.i lived in the U.K for a few years and really enjoyed it but still had to work and pay rent etc. and it's the same scene here.
Feel free to ask any questions, I'm happy to answer them and I'm sure any other Aussies on here will too.
I was in Sydney Australia for a week on RnR in 1970, I never saw a koala, or a kangaroo, much less a spider, one of my buddies did find the clap though.
Here in Panama irritating bugs are everywhere. I need shake out my pants and shoes every morning before putting them on, I forgot once and the scorpion below, put a hole in my ass cheek.

I would think some of those Australian native fish species would be quite enjoyable to keep.
Hi,
Thank you for the detailed reply.
We have family in Brisbane so we are looking at going to spend some time with them (4-5 weeks) to see if we like it.... plus I’ll visit a few LFS whilst we are there lol
A few years ago I would have jumped at the chance but we are now on the property ladder and I have my own business. Things are a little more complicated now as we’d have to start over again.
