Hey guys/girls,

Anyone out here keeping AUS Lungfish??

If you are could you share any personal experiences with me??

Diet, special requirments, tankmates, growth rates??

Would also like to know what you guys fed or are feeding when they are around 10 - 30cm.

Cheers,
Steve

I had two and honestly wasn't too impressed with them, I think they're highly overrated, lol... but that's just me. :p I had mine 8"ers in with a 10" FL gar and a 13" tropical gar in a bare bottom 120 wide. They liked freeze-dried krill and frozen market prawns. Supposedly they can grow about 18" in their first year but slow down quite a bit after that...

Yeah im not expecting anything extrordinary from them but for me its just one of those must have fish.

Thanks for the opinion and experience though :D

LOL, yeah, I might get another one just so that I can have the rarest of the lungs. Don't get me wrong, they're pretty neat, but nothing that you can't get out of a bichir (though as I understand they're just as rare as AULs down there :p ).

I didn't think you could get a Aust. Lungfish. I thought the only ones on the market is South American and African??

If you know the right people you can get them ;)

He live in australia, that makes it a bit easyer I guess.

Not really he still has to buy one.Its illegal to catch wild ones without a permit.
The big draw for an aussie lungfish is they are semi hard to get theres only one licensed importer in the United states.
Another draw is the look they have fins instead of whip like pectoral and pelvic fins
also they are considered the most primitive of the lungfishes.
unfortunately a few things many people do not realize 1. they get very big and bulky.2.Its possible they can outlive you with proper care.
There is 1 species of lungfish harder to find tho that would be Protopterus amphibius (East African Lungfish)-Anne

I have a pair of AULs and feeding them is no problem. They haven't refused anything that's hit the bottom so far. I feed them on cut raw shell-on shrimp, cut catfish fillets, mussels, clams, earthworms, earthworm sticks w/spirulina, sinking catfish pellets, rabbit pellets, and baby crayfish.
Of all 7 of my lungfish, the AULs are the most personable. They actually recognize me and move to the front of the tank and wait to be fed.
