Anybody keeping these guys? I currently have a group of 5 of them, and just find myself fascinated by these guys for whatever reason. The coloring is awesome and I love the red eyes! I'll take some pics later, but I was just wondering if anyone else has them, as there seems to be surprisingly little info out there on them, and I hardly ever see anyone mention them much in forums. From what I have been able to determine, they are slow growers... correct? Still not sure of max size though... at any rate... very interesting and apparently, underrated fish!

I have Australoheros Oblongum and love them!

I've had them about a year now. I keep them in unheated tanks, put them in a small pond May thru Oct here in Milwaukee, they have taken water temps down into the low 40s F, and spawned in the pond. I barely feed them in the summer, because they feast on algae which brings out their colors.

I find them quite peaceful. My male is about 5" female maybe 3", the fry grow slowly at first, but given warmth and protein they seem to really o fast, although I have found that too warm and too much protein will make them bloat. The tank the fry have been in this winter averages in the low 60s.

Do you guys keeping these, do you give a cool down period ever? Do you think it's necessary for their health?
I've never given mine any cool down period, and have no plans to. I have not noticed any ill effects at all. That said, I am no actively trying to breed them. Not sure if maybe that helps get them in a breeding mood or not.

When I put mine in the pond for the spring and summer, I consider that a cool down, because temps drops into the 40s many times during that period. It also seems to stimulate and trigger spawning when the temps rise again, in July and Aug.
I also keep Gymnogeophagus in the same manner. When I keep them at tropical temps all year, they didn't fair as well. During out winter, I do not use heaters for the ceibals and Gymnos, the tanks average in mid 60s F.
