just build a DIY overflow out of 1/2" pipe, works great.

I did some searching but not finding anything good. Can you post a link to a good DIY preferably w/pics so I can understand better how this would work? I'm having a hard time understanding how you would have it drain such a low amount but maybe I just don't understand well enough how it would work to apply it to my needs. Thanks.

No pumps right? I think I'm going to copy your plan, it looks nice an simple and will work even if there is a power out.
Looks easy to do as well.

Yeah it works for power outages too. No pumps, valves, timers, nothing to fail. The water you put into the tank overflows into the yard or where ever. Running the PEX line is super easy. You can add a T fitting to any cold water line and then run the 1/4" PEX along the base boards right to your tank.

What about those of us that have chlorine/chloramine in the water ... is 1gph detrimental (24g a day on say a 300g tank every day)?????? Or should I add a filter and what kind

Personally I think dilution is the solution for pollution (wow spell check was working hard on that one :grinno: )

Straight tap water works fine for me in Phoenix AZ. Might be able to check the water supply for the city of Phoenix on line and if it's comparable to your city then you will be fine too.

One gallon is a good starting point but you need to test regularly at first, once a week or so, and adjust the flow for your needs. I have a lightly stocked 360 that only needs 1 gallon an hour but my 450 with summer coming around is up to 2 gallons an hour :screwy:

Thankfully water is cheap and I reuse it anyway for deep watering my fruit trees.

Hm, well I know I tested my water at 10-20 nitrates and 1.5 ammonia ... I have no idea about chlorine and chloramine though ... couldn't find any info.

The city survey says (2009) 3.1 nitrate and no info on anything else so I dunno.
