total chance you were there at 1am when it runs. I'm upping it to 3 times a week now to handle the load as the fish get bigger.
That's really awesome that its all set up to take care of the expanding needs of the fish.

Obviously I do find it necessary:nilly: I can make more money, but not more time! There is also the enjoyment of designing and building it. I enjoy my fish tanks but I don't want to spend hours and hours working on them every week. I've just cut a huge chunk out of my maintenance time. It'll never be maintenance free but it's about as close as it can get - as far as I know. If I could figure out a way to clean the gravel and filter automatically I would :headbang2 Any one have idea's?

I'll keep feeding them myself, I like that part.

I totally agree with you!!!!!!
I am doing close to the same thing you are and your right...it is very enjoyable designing the system and making it work!!!!

My differences are: first of all I have 8 drains(holes) on the bottom of my tank...I did this to combine a water change with a gravel vac and evaporation at the same time.....
in order;
1) mixing valve 70f to 150f (smallest range I could find)
2) Canister filter(type you install under your sink)
3) Chemilizer mechanical chlorine remover filter
4) Rain bird irrigation pvc valve(24vac)
5) RTD(remote temperature device)( to keep the temp. set in case
my hot water tank can't keep up)
6) Rain bird valves before the tank and the sump
7) level switches in tank and sump
8) another 2inch valve from my 8 holes to my drain(teed together)
9) all the wiring goes to a Allan Bradley PLC controller 1500

Sounds confusing but in a nut shell that is my fresh water system,
my gravel vac system and my evaporation system combined....
A real challenge to say the least but lots of fun!!!!!

Can't wait till it's done.................

Self-cleannig filter is almost complete. It took 2 years to figure it out but it's up and running for 5 weeks now. Still a few things to complete, right now it's about 50% effective. I have everything to complete the filter but the time. The gravel situation was handled by moving to sand and plumbing returns to the bottom to blew the crap off the sand and into the water column until the filter picks it up.

The last peice for 100% maintenance free is cleaning the glass. I have an idea but need to finish the filter first. This water changer was removed last month when the new filter was built. I added this tank to the drip system my other tanks were on. This system worked excellent for 2 years, it just made sense to have all the tanks on the same and simpler system.
