Hey MFK long time member, just getting back into hobby after a 4 year absence.

When i left cichla were still only a few species and all the rarer cichs were just azuls. I am now seeing a ton of kelberi and other species that seem too be more readily available.
Are azuls and others easier to get still? or is it that they have been phased out and the new kels have become the "hot cichla"?

I would also love to hear from members about some of the revisions and new "hot" cichlas on the mkt. I have looked around and seen some cool stuff!

Cliff note version :old member getting back into it. Whats the new "hot" cichlas available? :)

i think its just because kelberi are more accessible now. I would love to get my hands on some azuls though, just kind of hard to find at the moment.

WC kelberi are hard to find again and so are azuls, especially new imports. I hear rumor of some piquiti and other rarer species being available before too long.

kelberi are everywhere so people buy em but if azuls were availble you can bet they wouldnt be in stock for months at a time like kelberi.

why is that? Do the kelberi have a wider range? I know certain cichla are unattain because of the countries export laws.

PWMIN, you say WILD CAUGHT are hard to find. so they are bieng captive raised now?

yes, the Bahia that are readily available are captive bred

Yeah the markets been flooded with bahia (and WC), went from being like 1k for an nice adult kelberi to now just a couple hundred bucks. :) Bahia are just kelberi being bred in Taiwan from a couple nice pairs. Not to mention everyones been searching for intermedia, but so far everythings turned up as tems. There's been an azul famine too now, but we might just be in luck now with Rich back & other vendors like Shark Aquarium who may bring some in soon.

Bahia is a state of Brazil, not a brand of kelberi's. The parents of the these F????( whatever) are from the state of Bahia in Brazil. Regardless of were the Bahia's are from, Nothing can beat the Wild caught Kelberi's that Jeff Rapps brought in.

I don't see wild caught Kelberis being readily available compared to bahia's. And the only Kelberi I seen that sold for $1000 was (Scatophous) <---spelling. The reason why he sold it for that much is because it was 1 out of 2 kelberi's in the U.S.

As for the "Hot" flavor of the month, I would have to go with Peruvian Mono's, Broko's Ocell's, and I guess Bahia's (I'm not a big fan of Bahia's). Wild Kelberi's (2nd and 4th Jeff Rapps batches are my flavor of the year) along with Azuls, pinima's and if possible, Xingu's, 24k Ceara's and Rio Negro Orino's.
