SO i have four discus right now and it seems that there is an alpha and then its like a chain reaction if the other two are around one picks on the other then that one picks on another one and then down to the last one and then it chills out for a litttle and everyone does there own thing then it happens again i feel like im seeing average cichlid behavior but sometimes it gets a little aggressive considering these are discus and i was told today that five discus would'nt fit in a 55 as adults but i think it would work fine and ive heard contradicting things from other people so somebody help me out because this is my first time owning discus and arent familiar with there cichlid/group behavior. On another note everyone is getting food and no fish are cornered into the top of the tank just a little chasing every now and then but when they are worried they all pack together

any experienced help would be nice there is driftwood and about seven tall swords for the discus to hide in and im feeding twice a day with every other day 20% water changes to keep quality as high as possible and security with the plants so help me out please can five fit in this fifty five gallon and comfortably grow to there potential size and be happy?

They're cichlids, it's just what they do. They may not be agressive like a dovii, but it's definitely in their DNA. 55g are just tiny tanks, 5 adults is not gonna work long term, in my opinion. I have 5 discus in my 190g!

so do you think that four will work long term in a fifty five? its all the room ive got right now its not my house and i cant go any bigger at the moment =(

I think so. There's really no magic number when aggression automatically stops. I had 3 for a while and they got along fine. There will always be quarrels amongst them no matter how many you get.

alright understandable just hoping that none of them get bullied too much i mean it seems normal i think the main problem right now is that one of the four is slightly smaller than the rest so if one gets picked on they turn to him and then he runs into the big man and boom he gets a little chase but as of now it doesnt seem as though its anything more than a little bit of territory aggression and a show of some parallel bars but ill keep you posted and thanks jacardona1 you seem as if your the discus information person around here? and would you be interested in some pics of the tank just for reference of whats going on?

No problem, and sure, pics are always nice :) Are you on simplydiscus.com? Great forum, and tons of knowledge there

and dude i just checked out your discus tank and that is amazing im dying to go up in tank size but i gotta wait to get my own place and your discus look amazing

god damn restraints pics will be up in a minute and dont bash me on being able to see the wires behind the tank i never got a background and if anything i want to do a moss wall for the back cover
