average fire eel growth rate?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I believe growth rate is determined by food and of course water changes, like all growth rates. If you can get them to eat flakes when they are young 3" to 6" range, it sounds silly but flakes are a great source of nutrition and it gets them growing ( the juvenile stage seems to always be the slowest part for fire eels) then once they are a bit larger say 12" get them eating all kinds of larger foods like earthworms, blackworms and shrimp. At this stage in life they really come into there own.
I currently own a small 7" fella who shares his tank with large ca cichlids like my Midas and he does great, he is a very aggresive feeder.
My large eel of 2years regretabaly died due to him escaping.
Alternatively to growing them you can just buy them at a large size my lfs sells 16" monsters in training for 60 pounds.

i have 2 tire tracks. one is over a foot, but was purchased at 10 inches. he's grown 2 inches in about 4 months. he's fat -- about 2 inches across in diameter. the other one is now about 9 inches but was purchased at 6 to 7 inches. he's grown 2 inches in 6 months. he's fattened up but is not as fat as the other. it all depends. there is no set growth rate for eels.

Has anyone got one that swims in daytime ? Mine hides and he is awesome looking so its a shame

I picked mine up yesterday but he is everywhere, he has only just settled down in the pipe I lovingly prepared for him. He tries to feel the Oscars with his nose but they freak out and swim away.

I have had My fire eel for about 3 yrs. He is all over the tank all the time (accept after feeding). When I got him he was about 4" and is now 20". I have noticed growth spurts but have not pinned down what is causing them. He only has two hiding places (which seen to be enough) but they are set up so no matter where he is I can get a good look at him. I have a TT that I have had for almost as long (also bought at about 4"), he is about 18" now. They both seem to grow slowly.
