average growth rate of chocolate/severum

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
lol, bare tank atm. they are in with 7 cherry barbs and three blind cave fish ( paid 2.00 for 3 blind cave fish from petco, they were brought in from someone, so the 2.00 would go to the humane shelter they told me. ) so far all gets along great! they come out and feed in front of me, which is good.

Well you have some work to do then. LOL Definitely going to need decor if they are going to last 2-3 months together.

Why wouldn't you just skip the 55 and go right to the 75? These have the potential to be large cichlids and the bigger the tank, the better. You'll often notice growth spurts when you upgrade tank sizes, not to mention those two severums will probably start harassing each other soon. Conspecific aggression starts early with severums and they'll need room to escape each other.

I can have severum fry from free-swimming to 2" in three months with daily feedings and water changes in a 55, and that's overstocked with 20 or so fish. It shouldn't take long before you need the upgrade.

Ryan gives good severum advice. Seen videos of his breeding pairs and he has helped me with my own setups.

+1 on the straight to 75 idea.

Patrick what size tank are yours in? Mine are in a 72 Bowfront and have been since I got them. Only tank mates are 3 tiger barbs and 3 clown loaches, I really wish these guys wouldnt have been stunted. They have the best personalities and I really hope they do not die early because of a stupid pet shop having them in too small of tanks.

My 4 turquoise sevs are currently in a 55. Their roommates are 4 Australian rainbows and 2 bumblebee catfish (that i never see and don't even know if they are still alive). I am hoping to get a breeding pair from the 4 and have them in their own 90. If I don't, I will have a single sev in a 55 with a couple keyholes, some cories and a few lemon tetras.

Stunting is the reason I get all my fish at 1-2" baby sizes and never from super overstocked tanks. I love the LFSs that are actually out to help aquarists and sell good quality fish without keeping this fish in poor environments. They are hard to come by. The nearest LFS to me is a little over a 45 minute drive away. I did business with them for a while (mostly because they got harder to find species in stock) and all they sold were fish. Their prices were very high for what I would rate as medium or "fair" quality fish. I rarely came across anything they had in stock and was mesmerized. Their fish guarantee was awful and their knowledge of fish was almost as bad. I finally found a decent store about an hour away. They have the same crap guarantee, but I don't mind so much because the quality of fish is much better. Haven't had one die on me yet (knock on wood). :)
