Hey guys! I got me an avodaco puffer today. Super cute and active. But i was wondering what should i feed it? Would floating pellets be good+frozen krill? Also do i need to feed it snails? Or is there an easier substitute?

Thank you in advance for the help :D

You could setup a small 5 gallon just to breed ramshorn snails if you want to have a steady source of snails...

Pellets are good if you can get your puff onto them...

Krill is somewhat pointless imo, better to feed nutritional foods such as pellets over krill

is it hard to get Puffers on pellets? which are better floating or sinking? Also im gettin some apple snails, i know some one who sells 5 for 1$ so ill just stockpile those, unless certain snails are better than others

Apple snails can get to the size of a baseball... Hence the name... Ramshorns are probably best coz they are prolific breeders and dont get too big...

Getting a puffer onto pellets is hit or miss... Some tend to go straight for them while others wont bat an eye at them...

Personally, i've always used sinking pellets, because i dont want the puffer accidetally gulping air while trying to grab pellets from the tanks surface....

My SAPs are taking the small .5mm Thera A sinking pellets when I feed my synodontis. I think the garlic smell helped get them to notice them.

Also have a separate tank for snail breeding, just waiting for the first batch of babies to get big enough to use as food. They're still tiny at the moment.

K ill try feeding my puffer sinking hikari cichlid. Would MTS's be good for my puffer? Iv seen yes and no online. Some ppl say its ok some no. Have you guys tried or know?

Also it may sound silly, but does the puffer really need the snails? I read apparently its only the bigger species who need to grind teeth

^ stay away from MTS, their shells are known to be hard enough to crack even large puffers teeth...

And yes, except for some of the lurker species, most puffers can have over-grown teeth if not fed at least some hard shelled foods every once in a while...

Why do you say krill is pointless? I have always been told it is a great source of protein.

Feed snails, crayfish, half shell clams, krill, prawn, shrimp, etc. I wouldn't bother feeding pellets, puffers are messy enough without adding pellets to the diet. I've had some puffers accept pellets and there was just powder flying out of the gills. Krill is great food for puffers, it doesn't have a very hard shell, but is still healthy food. Offer a varied diet and it should be fine. SAPs are the only puffer that requires crunchy foods for every single meal.
I have a small tub that I breed crays in, and a 30g planted comm tank that I breed ramshorns in. I feed the snails and crays lots of vegetables to benefit the puffer. If you can get 5 apple snails for $1, I wouldn't even breed them, just buy 5-10 a week and make sure that they are appropriately sized.
Just my opinion.
