Avocado Puffer tankmates?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'd recommend just keeping him alone. Or using a divider.

A divider is a good idea I've never thought about. We're gonna try to get one young and hope that it gets along with the parrot and pleco and whatever else we try to throw in there. If there are problems then I will move the bully or the one who is being bullied to my 35 gallon community tank. Thanks for the help everyone I'll let you know what happens. If anyone has any more tankmate suggestions please keep them coming.

I added a modestus that seemed to get along with other fish in the person's tank I got it from. The next morning many fish were dead, dying & missing chunks of flesh. You may not have a chance to rescue anything.

Also, keep in mind, this is a species that needs regular dentistry, 2-3x/year.

You're going to lose those fish.

I would think even more than that. But as long as he feeds him snails like once a month he'll be fine.

Younglin, You've kept this species?

To prevent dentistry as often as I stated, 90% of the diet needs to be snails.

It's not a problem for me to get as many snails as I need to. We are attempting to order a young small fish that will not be able to destroy all of his tankmates in one night. We will watch for aggression and if issues arise, either remove the fish or install a divider. Does anyone know if we would be able to keep live plants in the tank? I thought I read somewhere that puffers destroy planted tanks sometimes.

I kept mine with anubius.

Even at half an inch my puffer killed like 6 2 inch tetras.

Yes I have kept this species. Only for about 4 months because the thing was an absolute nightmare. Killed all it's tank mates, shredded my (plastic) plants, chewed the crap out of the airline tubing and the list goes on. The thing was insane. Trust me, keep it alone. If it doesn't cause problems I will eat my shoes.

Yeah, mine killed fish much larger than itself. Thanks for sharing your experience with your lil hellion!

Okay we decided we'll get an amazon puffer instead. Thanks for the help everyone.
