I plan on buying my first senegal on tuesday woohoo :)

But is there ANY way possible I can avoid the ones with the bad gene pool which inhibits its high growth rate? i'm just wondering if there are any "signs" i hould look out for? the one i plan on getting is about a 4-5" albino btw.

There is no way to tell by sight. You'd have to know the farm it's from and check the records (if any) of the lineage of the one you buy. You'll have an easier time growing a redwood tree out of your ***.

yup its really hard to tell w/ that size, but IME try picking one from a stock and not settling for the only one left on display, meaning choose wisely, get the biggest and roundest bichir you can find, check for any deformities, abnormalities or injury ask if its pellet trained already or if it is feeding well. so generally all you could do is buy responsibly. hope you get the best one available.

enjoy!

and you should know most of the albinos are genetically very bad, a lot only get 6 inches then look really screwed up, they get really fat, try getting a normal collored one, you would have a better chance of getting a healthy, genetically pure animal

Albinoism is not normal in any animal and senegals are farm bred for the albino trait so you already have manipulation of the gene pool and yes I have heard of many albinos
reaching only 6-8 inches-anne

so basicaly buying an albino you already dipping into a strange gene pool
