You're in NY, I can guarantee that there are fish services that would handle this for you. Have them come in once a week and do water changes and have your daughter feed a few times a week so it is less stress on the fish.
Renting; so that would require tank and supplies; which would mean leaving the wife at home; which would cause here to kill me, and the fish would then die anyway!

there's at least one per town for the most part. they usually advertise on craigslist. And yes it seems to me that over such a long period of being away you'd be better off with a pro taking care of things. Imo it's the only way you come back after 3 months to every fish being happy and alive.
I wouldn't over think it, truthfully. I wouldn't have anyone feed them more than once a week and would be content with a water change once a month. Try it for a month or two before you go and see how they do. Might throw in a Bristlenose pleco to keep the algae down.
