Just curious if any African buffs here know what this fish is. I have never seen an African cichlid like this before and thought it looked interesting. It shows some similarity to the F. rostratus I keep but I am almost certain it is a different type of fish. Look at the bone structure of the head and the stockyness of its body. Thanks for any help!

Looks to be Fossorochromis rostratus Female maybe.... But that is just my thoughts :)

thanks for the quick response. Thats a good guess but I breed F. rostratus and that is no female--at least from what I have seen. The body is too stocky and compressed. Maybe a F. rostratus x ____ hybrid? Here is a pic of one of my older F. rostratus females when I first brought her home. Notice the smooth torpedo like body and bone structure. They look very similiar but I think this new fish is something different. Hmmm..

Ya.. I think it is just deformed:) But you are ten times more experienced with them than I.. I only had a close guess because I was going to get some A while back and after research decided not to :) No tanks to dedicate :)

Nice female by the way :)

thanks. She looked even better after she had some time to heal up.

Anyone else have any idea what this fish could be?

Great fish you have there. I would guess it is a rostratus female that is slightly deformed. This does happen, apparently, from time to time in the lake. Could be due to over breeding in captivity.
In one of my mbuna species, have about 68 of them, I have a female that has a shortened tailend of her body. This leaves her with a rather stubby look and this is a wild caught fish.
My supplier also says it could be due to the food fed to her and some form of stress. Loads of possible theories.
:naughty:  :headbang2 :nilly:

I wanted to bring this back up because I still haven't been able to positively identify this fish. I now know that this is not a f. rostratus because I am now seeing egg spots and neither male or female f. rostratus display egg spots.

Does anyone know what I have here? Perhaps from Lake Victoria?
