The HOB escape artist thing happened with my TT as well. I came into the room and couldn't find him, but that's nmot uncommon as he hides in the java fern. Then I noticed the HOB top was off, and he was sitting still on the floor beneath the tank. Not quite dried out, but not freshly wet either. Popped him back in, weighted the HOB lid, and no problems since.

It would be nice to raise the tank level, but now I'm paranoid.

That's exactly what happened to me. I found him in the HOB 3 times before i finally found him on the floor. I think he was only on the floor for a few seconds before i found him (still slimy and wet) no problems at all. i wish i could raise the level back up too, but if i did i wouldnt be able to stop worrying all day. I'll leave the level down until i come up with a good idea to keep him in the tank.

Not a bad lookin eel better eel proof your tank qiuck fire eels are much more of exscape artists then tiretrack eels

Thanks...i've lowered the water level a bit, sealed the top better, and added a few more hiding places to keep him comfy.
