they have two big ones in my lfs but ive decided against it as all my tanks have occupants

They don't seem to be common atall where I live I haven't seen one ..?

they are quite a common thing.....due to the fact they are so hardy....pratically made up of stem-cells. They do need a specific tank setup though which is why most money grabbing LFS don't sell them....

but the cool ones get them in every now and again.

I've very rarely seen them around here too, but at least in the states, there are many science supply companies that sell them. I even found one that has mud puppies too. I've never seen them for sale around here

Axolotls are not as important in primary research as they once were, but a lot of major discoveries about development have been made using axolotls and other ambystomatid salamanders as the models.

In fact they kind of were saved from extincion because of that and the pet hobby

Yep! Their native lakes are now mostly polluted or filled as a consequence of the growth of Mexico City.

I love them but the piebald/black and white types I find particularly pretty .
