Hi,
A LFS near me suddenly got seven axolotls. A quick Wikipedia search says axolotls are listed as "critically endangered". If this is accurate, why are selling them for only $70 each.

There are many aquarium fish that are considered critically endangered in the wild, sometimes even extinct! The specimens in the trade are captive bred for the trade. Things like Redtailed Black Sharks, Roseline Sharks, several Goodeid livebearers and many others fall into that category. There is even the CARES program, which encourages the breeding of such vanishing fishes and connects breeders to each other to swap and spread bloodlines.

I'm sure that there haven't been any wild-caught axolotls in the trade for many years.

Have they tried reintroduction?

Gotta address the cause of the initial disappearance before you start throwing good money after bad by releasing more fish into the environment that no longer supports any.

Goodeids are plagued by water conditions that are being degraded by human activities like farming. When a species lives in one isolated drainage, which flows through a succession of fields now full of cattle who turn the creek into an open sewer, it's a bit silly to think that dumping a couple pails of fish into the water will solve anything. Not saying that's the case with White Clouds, but obviously something caused them to disappear...and that must be corrected first.

I’m not saying dumping a truckload into their habitat will save them, just asking if anyone knows if they attempted anything and what their cause of extinction is.

No, I get what you are saying. I just meant that a country like China doesn't even treat people with that much consideration and care. What chance does a one-inch fish in a mountain stream have?
