Axolotls endangered?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Like jjohnwm jjohnwm said most of the time it's from pollution of some sort that has made them extinct or endangered in the first place. That hinders the reintroduction unless someone has made an effort to fix the issue.
Axolotls fall in to the pollution catagory. Good thing hobbyists have mostly figured out how to care for them properly and breed them.

I'm quite sure they are captive breeding the Axolotls making them inexpensive.
There are many aquarium fish that are considered critically endangered in the wild, sometimes even extinct! The specimens in the trade are captive bred for the trade. Things like Redtailed Black Sharks, Roseline Sharks, several Goodeid livebearers and many others fall into that category. There is even the CARES program, which encourages the breeding of such vanishing fishes and connects breeders to each other to swap and spread bloodlines.

I'm sure that there haven't been any wild-caught axolotls in the trade for many years.

I didn't realize the endangered species lists don't include captive species. It makes sense now.

Add to the list of reasons that captive bred fish(And any captive bred animal) frequently is of little value to conservation efforts.

Ideally if you want to reintroduce a fish that is extinct in the wild you'd have fish you know were collected from that area. Imagine you wanted to reintroduce the tiger into the wild and they were common pets.
Let's see, let's do Siberia first. Ok, we need Siberian tigers. We've got this breed American Cat Fancy breed called "Siberian" But turns out they're 1/2 Sumatran, 1/4 Bengal with a dash of cheetah. Also most are hairless with stumpy legs because they're super cute.

Then there's this other breed, seems to be mostly Siberian, except they're all albino.

Why can't these endangered fish be bought by aquariums and zoos so that they can have special breeding/conservation centers for those fish?

If humans stop destroying those areas there would be no need for breeding and conservation centers. Also believe global warming may play a part in some fish and animal extinction.

The American Cichlid Assn has a C.A.R.E.S, program for many of the endangered and threatened cichlids.
In places like Madagascar, over fishing for use as human food, introduction of snakeheads, and environmental degradation has put many near extinction (especially some Paretroplines), and Madagascar has now banned collecting for the aquarium trade, so captive breeding has taken up the slack.
