I just rake my sand once every two weeks to avoid this.
 
There shouldnt be any gunk in the sand axie waste just sits on top and should be spot cleaned daily with a turkey baster! White sand is a good choice as any waste is clearly visible and easily removed. Sand is very easy to maintain and keep clean you just gotta keep a thin enough layer to avoid toxic gas pockets building up bout an inch thickness will do! Ive had the same sand in my tank that I got over a year ago and it is as spotless and pristine as the day I got it!

i have sand in a few tanks that is deep. one tank is close to 3.5 in. No toxic gas
