Interesting. Sorry for derail but do these scales fall out often? I ask because they're so large it seems pretty unhealthy to lose a scale.

They never fall out unless the fish has some sort of disease. They can be knocked out when the fish bangs lids or when being moved from pond to tank or tank to tank. They can probably be bitten off as well.

They a jumpers. And they get themselves injuried at time during catching or they are spooked.
