Baby arowanas

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You can house two arowana together, so long as they are happy with one another, or you have a huge tank. I used to have two young silvers that stayed together for about 4 months in a 135. They grew to be about 7 inches. I never had a problem with them picking on one another. I have seen in the lfs two, three and even 6 silvers up to 12" in length kept in the same tank, usually around a 10 gallon. those were usually beat up pretty bad. Size of tank is a big issue, the bigger the tank the more space they have to get away from one another. The way to get two to live together the best IMO is to grow up several 5+ and slowly take out one at a time several months apart. Until gradually you have the two that you want. but this is over at least a year, and still is not fool proof.

OK so stupid question time, are there such things as miniture arowanas?
And are there any other speices of arowanas that dont grow as fast or as large?

actually their is.

but there are afew catches

#1 there is a strain of asian aro called a short bodie, these aros are not deformed but are selectively breed.

#2 asian aros are illegal :(

I didint know that asian arowanas are illegal, why is that?
One of my local stores sells asian arowanas, is it just in the states that they are illegal? And the same store has baby jardini's they are about 3 inches but they are selling for 100$, the little silvers are 24$.
They also have some very nice red's that they are selling for like 25,000$. But thoes are like a foot to 2 feet in size.

because they are an endangered species

i would get one, but keep it to yourself and dont show it off, actually alot of people dont know that they are illegal so dont tell the pissed off girlfriend that they are illegal :D

25,000???? for a red asian aro?

thats over priced

the most they should be is afew thousand, i bet its a low grade asian arow.

Hes in canada are they illegal there?

My lfs has some baby silver arowanas, and I was thinking of getting 2. I have a 90g at the moment and, will in the future upgrade to a 180, in about 2 years.
My question is would they be ok in there for 2 years? Right now they are about a 1.5 to 2 inches in size. And will they be ok with a silver needle nose gar?

The gar will rip them up if its big enough. Ive seen one at my lfs.
