You are talking about the Asian arowanas they just pry the mouth open but with the wild silver arowanas they kill the father to take out the babies.

There're alot of farm breeding silver arowana in their ponds. there's no need to kill the brooder to get the fries. Maybe this apply to poachers but I guess it's not as common as before due to the constant supply from these breeding farms.;)

Native people in South America hunt silver aros for food, there is nothing wrong with that. And there is nothing wrong about selling the fry in order to make a few bucks for their families. Silver Aros are abundant in the wild, just like bass in North America.

It makes us all cringe to hear that our beloved aros have relatives that met the fate of the dinner table...As true as that is, I agree that there is nothing wrong with the fry from somebodys dinner making it's way to our tanks. I don't care about the commerce end of things as long as we can enjoy our pets as we do...;)

I think I read somewhere that there is or was a ban on collecting them in one of the countries there because the government feels that the fish are more important as a food source for the indiginous people there than they are for our tanks. They worry that over harvesting may impact the food source of the native people along the amazon.

It's importance in the chain I think. Unfortunately, the people are more important than the fish, the fish though are more important than us...

This thread has really opened my eyes to all the different fates of the Arow and all the other information i did not know about... very interesting.. so keep it coming if anyone has any more to tell..thank you all.

I'd be willing to bet that the price that the natives get for a brood of fry, would more than pay for a 1 adult Aro meal...This is why the fry are more prized than the parent dinner given what Zoo York 207 has stated...
