Baby betta diet

You can easily get them infusoria...I believe all you gotta do is put some old lettuce in a mason jar and let it sit for a few days. Then, put the jar in a dark room and shine a flashlight into it. You should see pink, these are the infusoria, get them with a turkey blaster...at least this is what some "breeder" told me, don't know the truth in it..anyone?

That is one way to get infusoria as well. Starting with water from a small pond or planted tank will be faster. Lettuce leaves will work (don't use cabbage as it smells extrordinarily bad!). No need to put it in a dark room and shine a light on it 24/7. just put it next to a window or under a light. If it is next to a window make sure it doesn't get too hot or the high temp will kill the infusoria. Google "betty splendens" and you will find a ton of info.

No, you can't really see infusoria well. You just get a nice green cloud. I've had the same green cloud going for two years. Mine works by letting pond snails breed in there and adding Oscar turds once in awhile to fertilize it. Also, a "fluorescent replacement"-type incandescent bulb is on it strongly for about 12 hours a day. And I do a 50% water change every six months, adding new crushed coral for buffering.

The window sill BS never worked. I've tried it so many times in all my different windows with different starter plants, etc. The only thing that worked for me was getting wild water with infusoria already in it and culturing it out with snails and poo.

I'm about to spawn a pair of bettas for the first time in years. This will be so cool! I'll definitely follow this thread.

If you put some water in a clear container and hold it very still up to a bright light you can see minute movement. Kind of like baby brine shrimp but significantly smaller. I also use a microscope to view my cultures. A low power microscope is more than enough. You can get them at Toys R Us for $25ish. I may try putting mine under a light as the window sill does produce some but not in very large amounts.

I just did a water change on my betta fry tank and I siphoned out a single fry. I used a turkey baster to remove him and put him back into my tank. As I brought the baster to the tank my hand slipped and all the water in the baster, including the fry, went gushing onto my carpet. Couldn't find the fry. His grave is now somewhere in my carpet. Makes me mad lol.

Oh, sadness. About as depressing as watching a guppy fry get poured into the toilet. Nothing to do but scramble and be too late.

RIP carpet fry. :(

If you get a mortar and pestle you can grind up a high protein pellet food like massivore and it the resulting powder will be happily taken by the smallest fry.
