hi everyone, i just bought my 1st ever BGK and its justb about 3 inches, i placed him in a 30g tank with pots and plants to hide, i housed him with a senegal bichir at same size and a pleco and they get along. i would like to ask what food is best for my bgk and when do i usually feed them? do i leave the food in the tank at night? your advices are apprerciated :)

mine LOVED bloodworms and little feeders, although at that size I suggest only bloodworms or blackworms. In fact, forget the feeders altogether. Give the food at night, as that is when he will prowl the tank.

and i noticed at 3 inches they're really shy or just like to hide a lot? at what size do they come out more often in the open?

he will be shy for a long time. mine only stopped hiding at around 7". you won't see much of him for a while (unless you turn the lights off, or dim them)

Agreed, most knifefish love it when the lights are off. Mine does.

i am lucky enough to have a very out going BGK he's out most of the time, when i first had him he was about 2½ inches,he just liked bloodworms then he got into frozen whiteworms, mysis, blackworms, artemina, earthworms ..i did buy him some hikari massivore he did not like these at all ,then a couple of months later he started to love them i have had him about 5 months and hes about 7-8 inches now

Ya mine loves bloodworms and earthworms and he'll come out for food no matter the time of day

At that size feed bloodworms and brine shrimp. If you want to see him more get him a transparent cave. They sell plastic ones labeled as ghost houses or you can go high tech with an empty jar. The long skinny ones like the type that are used for olives work well. Place it near the front of your tank and you can see himm all the time. As it gets bigger increase the size of foods. Mine sucks down pieces of fish, shrimp and beefheart.
