A channel catfish or a blue catfish will eat any fish that will fit into it's mouth, they are not particularly aggressive toward fish that are too big to eat. Then can be expected to get 18" long or bigger in an aquarium.

i have a few 4 inch fish that i would like to keep and they all can be aggressive. could i keep a 4 inch channel catfish with them and not have him eat them?

Ryan, the problem is not how big he is now, it's how big he will get. You can pretty much expect the channel cat to get 12" to 18" even under bad conditions. He will not stay 4" long for very long.

i know that. that is why i would either give it to my friend if they get their pond built soon or i would put it into a local pond that i help stock with other fish including channel catfish.

Anything half the size of the Channel or smaller is fair game. ;) But it does depend on the fish that it is with... which would be?

in my tank now i have: 1- 8" common pleco, 1- 4 inch rainbow shark, 1- 4 inch giant danio, 1- 4.5 inch yellow bullhead, 1- 2 inch cory cat, 1- 2 inch female platy. i am about to stat up a 17 gallon goldfish grow out tank next wednesday too.

Ryan, a captive fish should never be released into the wild, once a fish is in captivity it should remain in captivity or be killed, never released. Far too many diseases are being spread to the wild by captive release, in many places it is illegal to release a captive fish.

Any surface water that could drain into or be connected by high water or a flood should not contain non native or captive fishes, ever.

If you do not have the tank to move it to I would not get it.

As well anything a catfish can inhale it will, so count any tank mates as food.
