Ryan, a captive fish should never be released into the wild, once a fish is in captivity it should remain in captivity or be killed, never released. Far too many diseases are being spread to the wild by captive release, in many places it is illegal to release a captive fish.

Any surface water that could drain into or be connected by high water or a flood should not contain non native or captive fishes, ever.

ok i hear that way too much. im getting sick of it. all of the fish that my friends and i have put into this pond from our tanks have done great. grown large and died only when the pond had frozen over and we got a total fish kill bc of the winters here.

that wont happen for a while. the bullhead has slowed down in growth and the pleco has too. i hope the pleco doesnt get over 12 inches bc then i would need to sell it.

Anyway, the tank stock you listed doesn't sound like the best idea for the Channel. As I said, anything half the size of the Channel or smaller is fair game. The Giant Danio would become a snack in probably within the next month or two.
They get big, they eat a lot, and they need plenty of space. My 9" is a )v(onster, and still has a bit to grow yet. It was sold to me as a different named Catfish, and me not knowing what it was still bought it last April. (<--Happy Birthday dumba**, lol) If I were you, I wouldn't get it. It's for the best. ;)

ok. could i just get one and put it in a pond eventually i would only feed it minnows while in my ten gallon tank or 17 gallon makeshift tank? would it grow fine in a large pond if i feed it minnows and shiners while in my tank?

how fast has your 9" channel catfish grown?

It should do just fine in a pond, as many others have done this before.

EDIT: You know what, I have to look back at older threads to figure out what size he was at in what month, lol.

ok if i got one channel catfish at about 4 inches now. how long do you think it would be around July 1st? diet of minnows, shiners, and flakes (if i dont have minnows or shiners).

Number one, if your gonna ask for advice, please don't ignore it. Number two, your tank is allready way overstocked. Both your pleco and your bullhead do not belong in a 17 gallon tank. At a bare minimum, for the stock you are planning, a 180 long will be better, but will not be the last tank you will need. Also, everything you listed will be eaten by the bullhead, except for the pleco. They can fit fish almost as big as themselves into their cavernous mouths.
Please do not get a channel. They can get to be three feet long, and are alot of fish. Also, please do not release any fish into a naturalized pond. If you have a garden pond, feel free, but any naturalized body of water has the possibility of allowing diseases and non native fish escaping. This has many dire consequences, from disease transmission that could wipe out a native fish population to agressive non natives being introduced that could also wipe out a native fish population. The fish you release may be fine, but what about the other fish? This kind of attitude is what results in legislation like the one we recently faced, the ban on importation and sale of almost all of our aquarium fish.
Is that what you want to be responsible for?
On this website, we try to expouse responsible fishkeeping. Be prepared to be flamed if you ignore that, and ignore advice when given it. We all love our fish, and do not want to see someone treat them badly.

i dont ignore it. i read all of the responses that i get. also my fish that i have now are in a 30 gallon and they have grown fast until now. they have slowed down considerably compared to the rate that they were previously growing. and i can only have a 30 gallon tank since i am going to college next year and my parents wont let me keep a larger tank than the 30 in this house.
i am setting my 17 gallon tub up with a 5 gallon filter, an aerator, and a 10 gallon filter. the 17 gallon will hold 5 goldfish that i will grow to about 5 inches then put into a neighborhood pond. the 17 gallon will also include any minnows, shiners, bullhead or other baby fish that we catch from our minnow traps in a local creak. the 17 gallon is a very temporary tank, it will only be up for about a month maybe 2-3 months, depending on how the fish are doing in it and if the filters can keep up. i have a ten gallon tank that i would temporarily use for the baby channel catfish. i would feed him the minnows and shiners that i keep in the 17 gallon tank.
