I caught him at night. I went out with a flash light and he was an easy catch with a net. Also you can find lots of them early in the year in big blobs of about a thousand.
I pulled easy 2 footers out of a lake in minnesota on spinnerbaits. We fished mornings and didn't get any but around noontime the bowfin were feeding. Use strong line if going after adults.
Bowfin -Amia calva- are fantastic fish... as it grows you will become very aware tha they have a corkscrew intestine like sharks... they must have access to surface air ( like an anabantoid) and they have a strong personality... I have had several in my lifetime.. e ach one took a dislike to something an d made it clear.. one disliked m ferret intensely and would jump out of the tank to attack the ferret... another hated my room mate.. every time he would approach the tank the fish wuld jump out or throw water in his direction... -- the room mate had to leave.. lol
they do have a tendency if at all cramped to jump out of the tank.. they are made to travel across land ( better than any walking catfish ) their slime coat is frighteningly thick so try your best to make it happy but be ready to pick him up off the floor every now and then when it gets big and keep in mind if it gets out something is not to its satisfaction...
