Hmm that's strange because I have one that is about 2" as well and the colors are so different. Mine are like yellow and black pattern around the tail and fins. I remember sexing them had to do with the circle on their tail. Do you know anything about that?

I think the same is true with the gars which are more popular as pets than the bowfin.
 
Love these fish! Good luck raising it. Everyone in my area hates catching these, they usually kill them. Makes me sad. The same thing goes with oyster toadfish, another of my favorite natives.
I really want to set up 2 massive tanks; one for bowfin, the other for oyster toadfish. That way I can tell all my buddies that fish to give me the bowfin and oyster toads.
 
they act almost in everyway like snakeheads just a bit more scavengers
 
these guys are going to outgrow there tank too quick .if anyone is interested .

in the past mine got to around 10 inches quickly and then slowed way down...
