Just saved another box turtle off the road today and wife just saw a huge snapper hit and killed sadly. Must be a good turtle year. Iv saved 2 snappers and 2 boxs
You should collect that DOR snapper. They are often females looking for nest sites and are full of eggs. I have hatched hundreds of baby snappers from road kill females.
Thanks again everyone. No, I don't sell any of these. I'd rather they go back into the wild to make up for the ones that are killed every day by cars or whatever. Not to mention it's illegal to sell native reptiles in my state. Over the last 24 years of keeping this species I've released well over a hundred of the little guys. I usually keep them the first year which really helps to give them a fighting chance once released. The mortality rate for hatchlings is close to 90% for their first year of life in the wild. I guess just about every wild predator loves a freshly hatched box turtle. They grow quite a bit the first year and their shells start to harden as well.
well dang. I was just talking to my girl last night about getting an ornate box turtle for her first pet, while I supervise with my experience. They are cute little buggers. I guess I'll just have to find one locally. I appreciate what you're doing with them, and I'm in a way glad you didn't want to sell.. every little bit helps =) good job!
Just an update. The boxy is doing great and eating like a pig! So far I've got it to eat Reptomin, cichlid pellets, Massivore, cut up shrimp, earthworms and it's favorite....baby dubia roaches.
