Ok, i just got 2 1"-1 1/2" dovii babbies on tues. I got them to eat yesterday BUT they just look like they spit it back out. All i can get them to go after is flakes, although i HATE feeding flakes. They do not come to the top to eat and do hide alot. I know that this is what oscars do, but would this be the same for all fish? Also, they seem to eat the tropical flakes ,would that be ok for them? I will get some more blood worms tomorrow and try it. Just was wondering am i doing everything right here? The cool thing is,one seems to be more of a bully then the other, should this be something to worry about?

Many cichlids will act this way when moved to a new tank, especially at that size.Try flakes made for cichlids, hikari pellets and krill.Good luck!

What size tank are they in? I kept a 1" jag in a 10 gallon and fed it cichlid mini pellets from Tetra along with a small feeder guppy every now and then and it grew super fast. But then again I was doing daily 50% water changes. XP 1.5" growth a month was what I got out of him. Fun little guy, haha. You should try those pellets though. And good luck.

I have had no luck with pellets and my dovii.....he likes flakes alot, but live is the way to go for a dovii......i wouldn't use any other fish but my own though.

At such small sizes, I wouldn't be too horribly surprised that they don't take that much food. Don't give up hope yet though, as there are many many MANY other foods available for them. Try to avoid LIVE foods though, especially guppies, rosies, and goldfish. Just has too high of a chance to introduce parasites and what not. If you're okay with that risk, then go for it. At those sizes though, you would have to get some really really small guppies for them to even consider it.

Sinking Pellets are the way to go. New Life Spectrum has some of the best, they are small, promote great colors, and most fish readily accept them! ;)
Mysis shrimp, although it may be too big now, still give it a try. Frozen Bloodworms...perfect for wittle babies. If they still only want to accept flakes for now, then continue to feed them that till they get larger. Hold the flake between your fingers, and stick your hand about two inches under the water. Then release the flakes while they are still under water. This will suspend them in the water column and make the dovii more apt to eat them! ;) Hope this helps out a bit!

Avoid feeding a dovii live?????? Maybe you should refraise that, to limit your statement to lfs and the petco/smart. If you raise your own "food" thats the best way to go. My 2" dovii eats convict fry's, They look too big but he is a savage. Try some small insects as well.....

Not many people raise their own food, there are a very limited few that actually do. Generally though, its best to feed prepared foods because it is easiest to get the complete dietary needs of your fish. Simple as that.

For omniverous fishes...... however dovii are carniverous.......live fish recomended, simple as that.
