For omniverous fishes...... however dovii are carniverous.......live fish recomended, simple as that.

There are no fish are strictly carnivorous, herbivourus, piscevious...ect. In eating fish, they get vegatable matter, in eating plants they may get insects, in eating insects they may get plant or other animal products. Which is why it IS best to feed a varied diet, preferably prepared foods and the like BECAUSE they have more nutrition, are well rounded with tons of ingredients, and are specifically designed to help your fish grow. Sure you can feed your fish live foods, but nutritionally speakin they aren't gonna get the same type of benefits that you would if you feed them a varied diet with prepared foods. Its more of an owners personal preference when it comes to feedin live foods...as some people get a kick out of watchin their predators chance down their prey. Its just healthier to feed prepared foods. I've done experiments where I've gotten a group of the same type of fish, fed some only live, others only prepared, still others only frozen, and then finally a control group that was fed everything. The results were quite obvious...;) Feeding your fish live foods also increases the aggression levels, which to some people isn't really that desired.

ok ok, thanks for all the input. As for as live foods go, IF thats all he should eat (as a staple) then i guess the dovi is not for me. I realy dont think you have too feed any cichleds live food as a staple though, i could be wrong and im sure if i am, someone will be glad to let me know:popcorn: :) . I think there is just too many great perpared foods on the market. I do feed frozen blood worms and he seems to like it a lot, and as he gets biger will try silver sides. I also have a few differnt types of flakes he eats. I did loose one of the 2 which was sad, but on the other hand, the one that is alive is doing realy realy good now. Seems once the other one was goin, he became brave.
Thanks again for all the help on this. Ill just keep it up and as he gets bigger, ill change to pellets.
I had Oscars for a while now and growing one out to 13"+ in 2 years. He was VERY VERY heathy and very out going. BUT, sadly i decided to go brackish and do regret the loose of him, But he is in a good home. In the 2 years that i had him, the only live foods he was fed was ghost shrimp here and there.
OH!! and anyway, im not realy interested in how FAST i can get him to grow, but more in to raising a heathy , long lived pet.:)
thanks

i wouldnt worry too much about it. at the most don't feed them for 1-2 days and put in some of the stuff you want them to eat.
or go the baby guppy route - hard to beat live food.
