caught him in friends pond, he is about the size of a half dollar coin. going to put him in a 5g for now. Need to know the basics on what he needs as starters. *used to have a red ear slider as a kid* but i had him in everything from filling up big tubs of water and letting him swim to turtle races (was like 6 at the time :nilly:) and wanted to get another now.

wanted to know as far as water goes, do i use the same stuff as in my fish tanks to dechlorenize the water?

A 5 Gal tank??? Might as well just step on him and get it over with quick

well, personally i dont think you should have taken him out of the pond.
try to start out with about a 20 gallon long aquarium. also, if your planning on putting him back in the pond, do so now instead of raising him.

Yeah, what is the point of keeping him now to only release him? For one he will not survive in that size tank, secondly you should never ever re-release a Wild Turtle after it has been kept for a pet, that is the easiest way to spread disease and illness and is one of the main factors for wild populations dying out. There is also the fact that it its illegal in the State of PA for this very reason, to re-release wild turtles once kept as a pet. Point is, the minute you picked the Turtle up you doomed it to either death or a long healthy life in Captivity and its now your responsibility to give it one of those choices.

... that is the easiest way to spread disease and illness and is one of the main factors for wild populations dying out.
While the legalities of the situation are true. And from an ethical standpoint that is all true. I really do have to wonder just how big of an issue the above part really is. It gets tossed around all the time, and I'm sure there is some risk of spreading disease, but in all seriousness we should see a lot more death in aquariums if disease was that big of an issue. After all, it is quite common with aquariums to take wild-caught fish from all over the world and mixing them together, without some foreign disease wiping out the whole tank. Even if the aquarium owner doesn't do it directly, the store the fish came from are definitely doing it (as well as mixing wild-caught with tank-bred).

I also find it interesting that the OP mentioned it as a "friends pond" instead of just a "pond".

But after all that, I do agree with the other statements. 5g is too small for even a baby turtle.

That is a fair question, and I do wonder how severe the issue actually is. I know I have seen a documentary that pointed the decrease in Desert Tortoises on the interchange between wild populations and released pets, so at least in that species the issue has been researched and documented. I also know that The European Pond turtle and some species of Asian Turtles have seen their numbers decrease due to the introduction of Red Eared sliders and the competition for food that they bring and the exposure to new pathogens. In general while not as well researched as one would like, there does seem to be some truth to it.

Or u can drive it to me where it will have tons of room to play. Of course at that size something will eat it ;)
